About This Quote

The writer must expand his ideas to encompass the whole of life. The novelist must never stop expanding his ideas until he has embraced the whole of life. It’s not enough to round off an idea. It is one thing to explore the outer limits of the human condition.

It is another thing to explore what lies beyond that condition, to embrace fully all that mankind can know or experience. An important step in this process is to put down the ideal image, the finished work, which has become an idol of sorts. It can become a cage of security and limitation.

Then, after awhile one cannot help but want what one had before.
